Mission & Vision

Our mission

The Wyoming Historical Society is dedicated to preserving, exploring, and sharing Wyoming’s history for the benefit and enjoyment of all generations.

Our vision

Our vision is to ensure that Wyoming’s past remains accessible to present and future generations.

Who the Society is made of

The Wyoming Historical Society began in 1953, and is made up of donors across Wyoming, as well as from outside the borders of Wyoming and the United States. The Society is open to any and all individuals interested in the history of Wyoming and the American West.

The Society’s website opened in November 2000 and has been an information resource for Wyoming history ever since, now drawing more than 15,000 visitors a month. We offer it to better serve and inform our members, and to provide an avenue for education in Wyoming history.

What we are, and what we are not

The Society is a non-profit, donor-driven membership organization and a federation of local chapters across the state. We publish, we make grants, and we advocate for Wyoming’s historical resources. Membership is open to anyone with an interest in the history of Wyoming and the American West, and most of what the Society accomplishes in a year is accomplished by its chapters.

We are not the state archive, and we are not a county museum. The Wyoming Historical Society’s own museum and cultural center, the Korell Center in Riverton, now accepts donations of historical items and is where our own archive is taking shape. We cannot appraise or authenticate objects, but we can send you to the institution that can, which is often the fastest way to an answer.

Looking for something specific? Our Executive Board Regional Representatives are excellent first points of contact, or write to info@wyshs.org and we will send you to the right door.
